2020 Venice Carnival
The 2020 Venice Carnival kicks off February 8 with the theme “play, love, madness” and a full schedule of events until February 25.
The Feste sull’acqua (Water Festival) is the first of many fun opportunities in Venice, opening the Carnival on February 8 and 9. On the evening of February 8, the show entitled “Amoris causa” is performed in honor of the wisest of follies: love. The Rio di Cannaregio becomes a magical theater where dancers and acrobats perform in a fairytale setting. On February 9, the festivities continue with the Grand Opening: a water procession led by the now-famous giant wharf rat. The large rat parades along the Grand Canal to Cannaregio, accompanied by the boats of Venice’s rowing companies.
On February 15, the Corteo delle Marie starts at the oldest church in Venice, San Piero di Castello, reaching Piazza San Marco by way of Via Garibaldi and Riva degli Schiavoni. The marvelous procession celebrates the occasion on which the Doge once provided sumptuous wedding dowries for twelve Venetian girls of humble origins.
On February 16, the Volo dell’Angelo (Flight of the Angel) provides the most exciting show of the Carnival: from the top of the Campanile di San Marco, a young girl from the Corteo delle Marie descends into Piazza San Marco amidst the excited crowds.
February 15-16 and 24-25 bring the 2020 Venice Carnival Official Ball to the splendid rooms of Ca’ Vendramin Calergi on the Grand Canal: a fairytale evening with dinner and a show full of live music and artists. Masks are mandatory!
For the grand finale, on Fat Tuesday, February 25, the winner of the 2020 Venice Carnival’s most beautiful mask competition will be presented on stage at Piazza San Marco.
