Venice Carnival 2019
Venice Carnival 2019 is coming.
Only a few days left until the inauguration of the most captivating and spectacular of Venetian festivities: Carnival!
From February 16th to March 5th, 2019, Venice becomes a stage for masks, shows, and joy. San Marco’s square will host the most spectacular events, while many smaller parties will take place in the “calli” and “campielli” (Venice’s narrow streets and squares). Inside the palaces, on the other hand, there will be sumptuous and exclusive parties with VIPs from all over the world.
On February 16th, at dusk at the Cannaregio Canal, there will be a show with lights and acrobats on the water, while on the next morning there’s the regatta with the legendary “pantegana” (the big Venetian rat).
On February 23th you can’t miss the Festa delle Marie, the historical reenactment of the Doge’s giveaway of the dowry to twelve unlucky Venetian girls. The parade, in Venetian clothes, starts from via Garibaldi, and through Riva degli Schiavoni ends in San Marco’s square amid the cheering crowds.
On February 24th the heart of Venice’s Carnival is San Marco’s square with the breathtaking “Flight of the angel”: a young girl dressed in historical clothes will come down from San Marco’s steeple, marking the official start of the 2019 Venice Carnival.
From February 24th to March 2nd every day there is a contest for the best mask.
The grand finale is on Sunday, March 3rd with the prize-giving for the best mask of the 2019 Venice Carnival.
